Runners and supporters alike took to the streets of Charm City as the Baltimore Running Festival commenced this past Saturday. Since its revival in 1995, the marathon returned to the city for its fifteenth consecutive year.
More than 24,400 people spanning all 50 states and 29 different countries registered and turned out for this year’s festival. The festival included the traditional full marathon, as well as four shorter-distance races that runners could select instead. A half-marathon, a 5K, a Team Relay, and Kid’s Race all took place Saturday as well, which worked perfectly to accommodate all types of athletes.
The Baltimore Marathon, hosted by Under Armour is a part of the Baltimore Running Festival that takes place every 3rd weekend of October, this year falling on Saturday October 13th starting at 8 a.m. through scenic areas of Baltimore. This event has been in place for 12 years now and has set the bar high. This is an event for everyone, ages of participants range from 1 to 86 and representing 25 different countries! Now, let me shed some light on some meaningful numbers that this event has produced. There will be 27,000 runners this year (record breaking). There was 30.5 million dollars in revenue generated last year for the city of Baltimore and the State of Maryland and we look forward to what this year will bring.

Before the race the Baltimore Sun is hosting a Health and Fitness Expo is open Thursday, October 11 from 10 AM to 9 PM and Friday, October 12 from 10 AM to 9 PM and is located at M&T Bank (Ravens) Stadium. It is opened to the public and they will be selling shoes, apparel, active gear and health care products. After the races, at the finish line there will be a Celebration Village which is open to the public with a live band, interactive games as well as food and drinks. Over the past 12 years there has been 7 million dollars raised for several different charities including: Special Olympics Maryland, The United Way of Central Maryland, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Helping Up Mission, Parks and People, Sadie’s Gift, Badges for Baseball, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Maryland. As the city is just getting back to normal following the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix, another race is about to roll into town: The Under Armour Baltimore Marathon. The marathon is just one facet of the Under Armour Baltimore Running Festival that kicks off today with the Baltimore Sun Health and Fitness Expo at the Baltimore Convention Center, which is open to the public and free of charge.
This year’s Running Festival will feature 25,000 runners from all 50 states and 24 countries. The field of 25,000 is the largest ever in the 11-year history of the event. All the adult races are completely sold out, and waiting lists have been created for some of the races. This marks the fifth straight sell-out of adult races.
