Maryland Sports Aims To Increase State-Hosted Events
According to its website, the mission for Maryland Sports is to “enhance Maryland’s economy, image and quality of life through the attraction, promotion, retention and development of regional, national and international sporting events.”
For Terry Hasseltine, the agency’s executive director, that means casting a wide net.
While Hasseltine worked hard to bring the 2014 and 2016 Army-Navy games to M&T Bank Stadium and the 2011 game to Landover, Md.’s FedEx Field, and just finished working with Johns Hopkins University and Towson University to submit what he called “a robust series of bids” for the 2019-2022 NCAA women’s lacrosse championships, he’s also excited about an event happening at Fruitland Recreation Park Nov. 19-20: The US Quidditch Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships.

FootGolf is the New Hot Commodity at Many Maryland Golf Courses
FootGolf, a newer sport that has created a lot of attention nationally & internationally (i.e. McIlroy v. Rooney Nike commercial), is being added to golf courses all over the state. A close relative of the game the Scots developed, footgolf combines aspects of golf and soccer into one. FootGolf courses run right along side golf fairways, usually in the rough areas of the green. Golf courses around Maryland have started implementing this family friendly sport to their existing course as either 9 hole options or a full 18 holes.
Another Exciting Weekend for Elite Tournaments
Every year the SAC Columbia Invitational Memorial Day Tournament has grown in size and numbers, and this year was no exception. Reaching its largest numbers to date, the tournament reached the peak of what can be supported without expanding into other facilities and counties. According to Matt Libber, the VP of Operations and Business Development, “the tournament is currently spread over 4 counties in Maryland with over 1,000 games played in 16 different locations on 54 fields.”
Wild and Wondrous – The World Cup Watch
In the end, it was Germany hoisting the trophy and ESPN crowing about viewership. But here in Maryland, where soccer enjoys a passionate following (see: Gold Cup, 2013) there were plenty of other big winners. For those who kept spirits high and beverages flowing while the games kept patrons riveted, the 2014 FIFA World Cup was a five week fiesta.
Much of the focus in Baltimore and National Harbor (considered part of the DC demographic) was on the large gatherings in front of jumbo screens during the US matches. You found these along the Potomac at National 
Harbor, on Westside Park in the Baltimore Inner Harbor, and at Power Plant Live!, the entertainment district just north of the Inner Harbor.
